The Main Entrance Building
The Ohlsdorf Cemetery, with a total of 400 hectares is the largest known cemetery park in the world today. It is also Hamburg's most varied park and together with its historical monuments, 800 sculptural works and impressive garden architecture it is rated world-wide as a masterpiece of significant importance. The Ohlsdorf Cemetery is more than just a cemetery - a visit is highly recommended.
Pure Nature
Lush greenery, fresh air, relaxation - this also makes Ohlsdorf Cemetery a memorable place. It is Hamburg's largest and most diversified park. Here flourish 450 different kinds of conifers and deciduous trees. Water fowl animate the ponds and streams. Besides the more commonly found birds the Cemetery is one of the selected breeding places of the rare kingfisher, as well as the tawny-owl and long-eared owl. A walk amongst the flowering rhododendrons from the beginning of June is recommended. An ideal place for relaxation - an oasis of tranquility right in the very heart of the city of Hamburg.
Garden Architecture
The Ohlsdorf Cemetery opened its gates in 1877. Designed as a landscape park by the first appointed Cemetery Director, Johann Wilhelm Cordes (1840-1917), its grandiose scale, along with its very unusual garden architecture, impresses all those who visit the park.
Culture
The Ohlsdorf Cemetery truly reflects Hamburg's cultural history. On display in open-air surroundings are numerous historical monuments and sculptural works of international artistic importance. Also the opening of the Cemetery Museum in 1996, located at the main entrance, exhibits many treasures from the past. It gives an insight into mortality, death and burials over the last 120 years to the present day.

The history of the city of Hamburg is extensively recorded at the Ohlsdorf Cemetery. Mayors, Senators, Poets and Literary Figures, Musicians, Actors and Actresses - many distinguished personalities have found here their last resting place.
