Lord of the Rings and
Dragonrider of Pern
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892 -1973) is the
'father' of modern fantasy literature. His was the first, and for many,
the best. 'The Hobbit', and to a greater extent, 'The Lord of the Rings',
combine the 'feel' of ancient mythology, with captivating characters, and
an intensely rich sense of history; a history which Tolkien spent more
than 50 years creating. I believe, every one who is interested in Fantasy
and Science Fiction literature, HAS to read those wonderful books.
Anne McCaffrey (1926 -
) in my opinion she has created one of the most beautiful worlds within
the vast area of Fantasy and Science Fiction literature. For me, her most
outstanding stories are those about the "Dragonriders of Pern" (and she
writes at them since 30 years now) - though she did write and still writes
a lot of other interesting books. What I like most in her Pern-Novels is,
that she has not only very deep character settings but she often has very
strong minded women and she is one of the few authors, who is not "afraid"
of having gay characters in her stories, such as the riders of the blue
dragons. Even though you will find her books on the SciFi shelves at the
bookstore, the setting of Pern is more like the feudal times in the Middle
Ages. I guess she belongs to the SciFi section, because once the ancestors
of the Pernese people came with star ships from the Earth and as farther
the stories moved, as closer they tried to re-create modern technology
within their abilities.
